Wet and Dry Adhesion Properties of Self-Selective Nanowire Connectors

چکیده
n e s s g f t p c s a w ( Here, the wet and dry adhesion properties of hybrid Ge/parylene nanowire (NW) connectors are examined. The ability of the NW connectors to bind strongly even under lubricating conditions, such as mineral oil, sheds light on the dominant role of van der Waals interactions in the observed adhesion. The superhydrophobic surface of the NW connectors enables the wet, selfcleaning of contaminant particles from the surface, similar to the lotus effect. In addition, the effect of NW length on the shear adhesion strength, repeated usability, and robustness of the connectors, all critical properties for applications that require reversible binding of components, is examined.

The ability of gecko lizards and many insects to climb vertical surfaces relies on the hierarchical microand nanofibrillar arrayed features on their feet. The fibrillar structures provide conformal contact with the opposing surfaces to maximize the van der Waals (vdW) interactions. These adhesive systems found in nature have inspired researchers to design synthetic adhesives by using fibrillar ...

Microand nanostructured surfaces found in biological systems have inspired the fabrication of functional materials with unique optical, chemical, and mechanical properties. Inspired by the nanofibrillar structures of gecko adhesives, we recently reported self-selective, chemical connectors (i.e., fasteners) based on interpenetrating nanowire (NW) forests, which primarily use the highly tunable ...

Conventional connectors utilize mechanical, magnetic, or electrostatic interactions to enable highly specific and reversible binding of the components (i.e., mates) for a wide range of applications. As the connectors are miniaturized to small scales, a number of shortcomings, including low binding strength, high engagement/disengagement energies, difficulties with the engagement, fabrication ch...

An array of micron-sized setal hairs offers geckos a unique ability to walk on vertical surfaces using van der Waals interactions. Although many studies have focused on the role of surface morphology of the hairs, very little is known about the role of surface chemistry on wetting and adhesion. We expect that both surface chemistry and morphology are important, not only to achieve optimum dry a...
